The Blair Junior Legion baseball team is 5-3 this season, having topped Ashland 3-1 on Thursday.
Post 154 pitcher Hans Sorensen kept the visitors in check throughout, picking up the win on the mound after holding them scoreless until the seventh inning.
In one highlight play, catcher Andrew Smutny and infielder Tucker Storjohann worked together for the final out of the right-handed Bear's pitching victory. With an Ashland runner still leading off of third base on the pitch, the Blair player behind the plate threw the baseball down the line where Storjohann tagged him to end the game.
It ended with Post 154 on top after coach Howie Brewer's team scored runs during the third and fifth innings. First, Andrew Korth scored on a balk call.
Then, during the fifth frame, Korth hit a single off of the Ashland pitcher, who — after a brief delay — returned to the hill. Smutny walked next, leading to a bunt by Aiden McBreen, who moved the runners over.
Sorensen then contributed to his cause on the mound with a two-run double, pushing the home squad's lead to 3-0.
Blair was scheduled to play Omaha Buena Vista on Saturday, too, but the game was called off due to concerns about weather in the area. The Post 154 Juniors were scheduled to play Millard Sox Gold on Sunday and next compete 5:30 p.m. today at Vets Field against Plattsmouth.
Fort Calhoun Juniors drop to 0-10
Daniel Pawol notched an RBI single , but the Fort Calhoun Junior Legion baseball team dropped to 0-10 Friday with a 9-1 loss at Louisville.
The host team took the lead during the bottom of the sixth inning and won in six frames by run rule.
On June 12, the Post 348 Juniors lost a 15-1 game at Ashland, too. The Pioneers scored their lone run during the first inning on a Presley Olberding single.
Post 71 Juniors split games
The Arlington Junior Legion baseball team split games against Pierce and Columbus Lakeview last week.
First, Post 71 managed to beat Pierce on June 12, coach TJ Stosich confirmed. The game went ahead and was completed at the Washington County Fairgrounds without interference from storms that hammered eastern Washington County with hail.
Two days later, though, Lakeview earned a 19-4 home win against Arlington. The Eagles scored a run during the top of the first inning, but trailed from the second inning on, losing by run-rule.
