FCHS falls at Louisville
The Fort Calhoun Pioneers won a set Thursday in Louisville, but lost the match 3-1 (18-25, 25-13, 25-23, 25-18) during Nebraska Capitol Conference Tournament consolation play.
Coach Liz Sevcik's team capped its first-set victory on a 7-0 run. After the host Lions pulled within 19-18, sophomore Emilee Thayer-Mencke and the Pioneers got to work to close it out.
Thayer-Mencke notched a kill first at 20-18 before her block gave FCHS a three-point advantage. She swung hard and hit the ball to the right-side back corner for a 22-18 lead, too.
Next, Ansley Elofson's serve went unreturned by Louisville before Taylor Stewart's kill at 24-18. That's when another Elofson serve led to set point as it careened off of a Lions' shoulder, was bumped back into the air by another player and ultimately fell to the court.
The home team rebounded from the set loss, however, and won the next three, improving to 13-13 overall.
Fort Calhoun (8-17) next competes 7 p.m. today at home against Conestoga. Parents Night ceremonies will take place in addition to the volleyball action.
