Herman is celebrating its 150th anniversary. The centennial was marked Aug. 19-21, 1971.

The town was named after train conductor Samuel Hermann who was aboard the first train in the 1870s when railroad tracks were laid from Omaha.

In June 1899, a tornado swept through town, demolishing the downtown and 13 people lost their lives. Herman at one point boasted the largest department store for a town of its size in Nebraska. The peak population of 427 residents was reached in 1940. There are now approximately 271 residents.
