Great Plains Communications has been adding fiber and business customers in Blair over the past several years, but that is expanding soon, according to an announcement made by the company this week.

"We believe that a comprehensive fiber build for both business and residential customers is the next logical step for the community to meet the rising demand for fiber services to advance the City of Blair," said Janelle Allison, chief operating officer. "We are very excited to be able to bring these forward-thinking services to homes and businesses and work even more closely with everyone in our home town."

Allison said the company will be performing work and turning up customers in phases.

"We anticipate that the first customers will be turned up in August," she said.

The projects are scheduled for completion by spring of 2022.

“Fiber advances communities by drawing new businesses, creating new career opportunities and enabling citizens to learn, work and access entertainment from home,” CEO Todd Foje said in a press release. “We are proud to deliver these forward-thinking services powered by our growing 13,500+ mile regional fiber network to homes and businesses in Valley and our hometown of Blair.”

The company has been headquartered in Blair since 1926.

"We are continually evaluating market expansion opportunities and ways to extend and enhance our 13,500+ mile regional fiber network," Allison said.

Residential customers will be able to receive competitively priced, fast and reliable services delivered over fiber to their homes with speeds up to 1 gig, according to Allison.

"This will allow people to work and learn from home, stay in touch with family and friends by video chat and stream entertainment on multiple devices without lag or buffering," Allison said. "We will also be offering an IP based video service, GPC iTV, and GPC Whole Home WIFI which is an intuitive service that provides a consistent WIFI signal throughout the home. In addition, we will be offering phone service with the latest calling features and bundle discounts."

Businesses will be able to take advantage of fiber driven services including high speed internet with speeds up to 10 gig, managed Ethernet, GPC Cloud Connect service, business managed WIFI and traditional and cloud based voice services.
