FRIDAY FOOTBALL UPDATE: Washington County teams go 2-1

Posted

High school football teams from Arlington and Fort Calhoun both won Friday night, while the Blair Bears fell just short at home.

Eagles improve to 1-1
Brothers Jake and Ben Flesner combined for three touchdowns Friday as the AHS Eagles bested Conestoga, 22-6. The win pushed their season record to 1-1 overall after a first-week loss to Fort Calhoun.
Jake Flesner scored both of his touchdowns during the first half as Arlington built a 16-0 lead. First, he caught a 26-yard touchdown pass from Owen Ladehoff before adding six more points on a 10-yard run.
The visiting Cougars notched their first score with 5:40 left in the fourth quarter, but Ben Flesner raced 80 yards on a run 13 seconds later to reach the game's final margin — a 16-point AHS victory.
The Eagles next host Raymond Central at 7 p.m. on Sept. 12.

Bears drop home game
Neither team scored during the second half Friday as Blair dropped a 14-7 game to Lincoln Pius X at Krantz Field.
The Thunderbolts jumped out to a 14-0 lead before Bears senior Blaise Baughman took off on a 26-yard touchdown run with less than 2 minutes remaining during the second quarter.
The defenses kept the opposing offenses scoreless from there. Even so, BHS threatened to tie the game late, but a fourth-down pass attempt deep into Pius X territory fell incomplete.
Blair is 0-2 and next plays Thursday at Gretna. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Pioneers top Roncalli by 14
The Pride scored first and last Friday at home, but the Fort Calhoun Pioneers scored all 27 points in-between during their 27-13 win.
FCHS (2-0 overall) took advantage of turnovers to earn its lead. Interceptions by both Eli Tinkham and Logan Brewer set up touchdowns by Kaiden Rodriguez and Blake Welchert before Brewer also recovered a loose ball on a kickoff. That latter play allowed quarterback Adam Elofson to throw a touchdown pass to Kade Foy for a 20-6 advantage, according to official Fort Calhoun Activities social media posts.
Calhoun’s first-half lead held until late in the fourth quarter when Elofson threw his third touchdown pass. This time, he connected with Rodriguez after the back ran one in earlier.
Roncalli scored just before the end of the game, too, but it was too little, too late.
FCHS next plays 7 p.m. Sept. 12 at Boys Town.
