UPDATE, 8:15 a.m. Saturday: It's official. Both the Arlington Eagles and Fort Calhoun Pioneers will play first-round playoff games on Oct. 31. The Eagles will travel to second-seeded Wahoo Neumann in Class C2 play, while the Pioneers will host No. 11 Gothenburg, according to brackets posted online by the NSAA. Kickoff times are not yet officially set.
The Fort Calhoun and Arlington football teams now await the official NSAA playoff brackets after Friday’s end to the regular season.
The Pioneers (7-2 overall) and Eagles (5-4) appear in contention for postseason spots in Class C1 and C2, respectively. FCHS beat DC West on Friday night, while AHS lost at Fremont Bergan.
Blair, meanwhile, closed out its Class B season with a 1-8 record after Friday night’s loss at Omaha Skutt.
No. 8 Fort Calhoun 21, Douglas County West 20
Coach Zach Byrd’s Pioneers came from behind to beat the Falcons on the road Friday night.
Kaiden Rodriguez ran the ball into the end zone for the go-ahead 2-point conversion after also scoring the touchdown that cut FCHS’ fourth-quarter deficit to 20-19. The big back also scored a touchdown during the third quarter after Adam Elofson’s first-half touchdown pass to Eli Tinkham, who returned from injury against the Falcons.
The Pioneers are guaranteed a Class C1 playoff spot, but did not have an official opponent as of 11:15 p.m. Friday.
No. 5 Fremont Bergan 34, Arlington 12
The Eagles hung with the fifth-ranked Knights for through three quarters Friday.
Coach Troy Schlueter’s team lost, though, despite a touchdown run by Ben Flesner and an 80-yard touchdown pass from Owen Ladehoff to Luke Sharp.
Arlington now waits to see how the Class C2 wild card standings shake out. If it lands a playoff spot, it’ll travel for a first-round playoff game for the first time since it played current Boston Celtic Baylor Scheierman and the Aurora Bulldogs in 2018.
No. 5 Omaha Skutt 49, Blair 34
BHS closed out its season with its highest scoring game of the fall Friday.
The Bears scored five touchdowns against the fifth-ranked Skyhawks, including four on quarterback Brevin Leggott throws. Hayden Daggett caught three scoring passes, while Andrew Korth pulled down one.
Back Blaise Baughman scored a rushing touchdown, too, as Blair finished 1-8 overall in coach Will Lansman’s first season.
