Fort Calhoun Seniors drop home game

Springfield hits grand slam in road win

Springfield put together a seven-run inning and beat the Fort Calhoun Senior Legion baseball team Thursday, 11-3.
The six-inning, run-rule loss dropped Zig Drywall Post 348's record to 6-6 this season.
“Just got to throw strikes,” coach Jerry Wellwood said after the game. “You can't walk the nine-hole (batter) and we walked the nine-hole three times tonight.”
His squad led 3-0 when the visiting team notched its game-flipping seven-run frame in the fourth. Springfield had two RBI singles, an RBI triple and a grand slam home run to take a 7-3 lead.
“You're just trying to hope for a double play, throwing them something to hit, and the kid hit it and got it out of the park,” Wellwood said.
Zig Drywall's Jordan Back, Levi Lasher, Chase Premer and Sam Genoways all reached base during the next two innings, but none of them scored a run before Springfield added four more of its own during the top of the sixth.
Back walked again during the bottom half of the final frame, but the visitors ultimately won by run rule when the next two batters struck out and flew out, respectively. Genoways and Nathan Kramer did turn at-bats into runs earlier in the game, but it wasn't enough.
The Fort Calhoun loss led right into the players' three-day weekend — their longest stretch of scheduled off days since the start of the summer season.
“Spend time with their families,” Wellwood said when asked what he wanted the kids to do with their time away. “Recharge a little bit.”
The open schedule coincided with the start of the College World Series in Omaha and Father's Day.
“Just go get your three-day fill in and come back ready to go for a tough week,” Wellwood said, repeating his directive. Zig Drywall opened its return to the field with a game Monday before today's 7:30 p.m. home contest against Omaha Roncalli.

Post 348 wins 3-inning game
On June 11, the Zig Drywall Seniors played a three-inning game in North Bend against Platte River Rivals. Coach Wellwood's team scored five runs during each of the three frames played, ending the game by run rule.
Kenny Wellwood pitched, earning the shutout victory with six strikeouts. Alex Christensen led all Post 348 batters with four RBIs, while Kramer, Back and Logan Schwab had two apiece.
