Fort Calhoun, Blair battle large field fire

Posted

Fort Calhoun Fire and Rescue first responded to a large field fire in the 2900 block of County Road P51 Friday afternoon.

The fire began around 3:30 p.m., and was quickly spread due to heavy winds, said Fort Calhoun Chief Dan Mallory.

Because of this, Fort Calhoun called mutual aid from Blair, Kennard, Irvington and Ponca Hills to assist. Local farmers with discs also assisted in fighting the flames, which took about five hours to contain.

Mallory said the departments put the fires out before they reached any structures near the county road.

Washington County is currently in a burn ban until further notice, and Mallory said until some precipitation allows the grass to become greener, the ban could last a while.
