Pioneers split triangular duals 1st

Posted

Fort Calhoun Pioneers wrestled across three-straight days of competition last weekend.
Varsity competitors were at Tekamah-Herman on Thursday, and Raymond Central on Friday and Saturday, picking up wins along the way.
First, the FCHS boys split a pair of duals on the Tigers' mats during a triangular. Coach Drew Welchert's team beat Logan View first, 43-24, but dropped a 48-31 dual to Tekamah in the nightcap.
Against the Raiders, the Pioneers' Landon Bernasek, Gage Nixon, Seth Waters, Matthew Kelly, AJ Duros and TJ DeMilt wrestled three full periods and picked up decision and major decision victories. Presley Olberding claimed a 49-second pin at 120 pounds, too.
Tekamah-Herman, however, earned team points across eight of the 14 weight classes against Calhoun. Nixon, Merritt Olberding and Presley Olberding, however, won individual matches in defeat.
On Friday, the Fort Calhoun girls finished tied for 13th out of 23 teams at a Raymond Central tournament. Anna Rae Hartline and Tacey Belina led coach Lilly Gossman's team with fourth-place finishes.
Belina was 4-2 at 155 pounds, securing three pins and a 6-4 decision win against Tessa Brooks of Omaha Marian. The Pioneer lost her third-place match to Kirah Ackley of Lincoln Northeast, 8-1.
Hartline, meanwhile, went 3-2 at 145 points. She won two matches by pin — including a 23-second effort against Marian'S Amelia Spieker — and earned a 7-4 decision during the consolation rounds. She was pinned by Blue River's Abby Lindsley during the third-place match.
FCHS' Madi Larrick and Ali Dill also competed at Raymond Central on Friday, combining to go 2-4 at 125 and 130 pounds, respectively. Larrick both wins, including a 36-second pin of Lincoln Northwest's Ainsley Rasmussen.
The Fort Calhoun boys then notched a 10th-place team result Saturday back at Raymond Central. Sixteen teams earned scores overall.
Merritt Olberding was the Pioneers' top finisher, claiming third at 106 pounds after winning four-straight matches after a quarterfinals loss. He pinned Sean Shultz of the hometown Mustangs in the third-place match.
Nixon, meanwhile, took fourth at 132 pounds with a 3-2 tournament record. Presley Olberding was fifth at 113 and Bernasek claimed the same result at 126, too.
DeMilt was sixth at 157 pounds as well.
FCHS was set to compete again Monday at Nebraska City. Results will appear in Friday's Washington County Enterprise.
