The Class C1-3 Subdistrict Tournament's top seed started postseason play Wednesday with a 53-40 victory.
The Fort Calhoun girls basketball team advanced to Thursday's finals past Omaha Roncalli, outscoring the Pride during three of the four quarters played. The win pushed FCHS' season record to 16-8, while its opposition ended the year 7-16.
“I knew Roncalli was a lot better than their record showed,” Pioneers coach Eric Jones stated. “They play a tough schedule and they'd barely lost to some teams we played close.”
Raeann Massey led Calhoun with 17 points against the Pride. The guard made two 3-pointers and sank all five of her free throw attempts.
The Pioneers' Ansley Elofson added 16 points, too, including nine during the fourth period as the top-seeded home team held off its visitors.
“Thought the girls showed great energy, focus and composure tonight,” Jones said, noting the defensive efforts of Ari Nelson, too.
Results from Fort Calhoun's subdistrict final game against Malcolm will appear in next Tuesday's Washington County Pilot Tribune edition.
