FCHS girls fall behind early in home loss

Yutan picks up 58-19 basketball victory

Fort Calhoun girls basketball coach Marty Plum took a timeout just 90 seconds into Tuesday's home game against Yutan.
The Pioneers were struggling against the Chieftains full-court pressure and it, ultimately, cost them the 58-19 Nebraska Capitol Conference game. FCHS is 1-4 this season, while Yutan improved to 3-1 with the victory.
“Help a teammate out, so they're not alone on the press break,” senior Dala Drowne said when asked what her squad can do better next time to combat the press.
The Pioneers fell behind 19-4 through one period and trailed 35-8 at halftime. Drowne scored her team's first bucket during the first period on an inside pass from Maddy Tinkham with just 2:03 left. She finished with six points total, while sophomore Kaylee Taylor led the home team with seven overall — including three on a long-range shot in the third period.
Ari Nelson added four Fort Calhoun points in defeat, while Bria Bench notched two, too.
The Chieftains, however, had three players with double-figure scoring totals. Mylee Tichota scored 16, while Haley Kube and Maura Tichota added 14 apiece.
Plum's team, meanwhile, is focused on improvement.
“We just need to pass better,” Drowne said. “Be on time, on target.”
The Pioneers next compete 3:30 p.m. Saturday. They play on the road at Bancroft-Rosalie.
