Wahoo High School earned a Platteview Invite No. 1 team title sweep Friday, but Fort Calhoun tack and field wasn't far behind.
Battling the cold — and watching the sky for the forecasted rain — coach Mandy Taylor's squad earned second in both the boys and girls standings. The Pioneers scored 77 points to the Warriors' 104 in the boys' race, while the FCHS girls tallied 66 — eight behind Wahoo.
To combine for 133 points, the Calhoun teams won five combined events. The 400-meter relay boys lineup secured one victory, stopping the clock in 43.49 seconds. Alex Schuler, Clay Bohnenkamp, Kaidan Rodriguez and Michael Maxon handed off the baton to one another for the result.
The FCHS girls, meanwhile, won the 1,600-meter relay in 4:19.37. Madi Larrick, Ari Nelson, Bella McLaughlin and Kaylee Taylor ran it.
The mile-long relay was just one of Taylor's three wins on the day. She also claimed gold-medal finishes in the long and triple jumps, finishing with marks of 16 feet, 2.25 inches, and 34-3, respectively.
Sophomore Emilee Thayer-Mencke, meanwhile, won the high jump, clearing the bar set at 5 feet, 2 inches.
The Pioneers secured five second-place results at Platteview, too. Maxon earned two in the 100 dash and long jump, while Seth Waters ran the 800 run in 2:05.36 for runner-up honors.
Taylor was second in the girls' 300 hurdles, too, while Larrick secured second in the 100-meter hurdles race.
FCHS next competes 10 a.m. Thursday during the Douglas County West Invitational in Valley.
Unified track athletes compete
Fort Calhoun's Unified track and field athletes competed Friday at Platteview as well.
Notably, the Pioneers won the first foot race of the meet. The 400 relay team of Anna Taylor, Will Turley, Emery Foy and Will Maxon clocked in at 1:00.58 to secure first-place honors.
