Washington County track and field teams combined for 304.5 points Saturday during the Nebraska Capitol Conference (NCC) Meet at Conestoga High School.
Event wins resulted in 120 of those points as the Fort Calhoun boys earned runner-up honors and the Arlington girls took third. The Pioneer girls claimed fourth and the Eagle boys were sixth.
Both Syracuse teams, meanwhile, swept the NCC titles with 267 points between them.
Fort Calhoun's Afton Byelick produced, arguably, the most-notable Washington County event win at Conestoga. She bested second-place Whitney Wollberg of Arlington in the pole vault, soaring over the bar set at 10 feet, 6 inches. The result broke her own school record for the second-consecutive meet and is the new conference meet record.
Byelick wasn't the only Pioneer to win an individual event, though. Michael Maxon (100- and 200-meter dash) and Matthew Kelly (110 and 300 hurdles) won two each, while coach Mandy Taylor's athletes also won two relay races.
The Calhoun team of Alex Schuler, Clay Bohnenkamp, Conner Hart and Maxon won the 400-meter relay in 44.36 seconds, and Maelie Nelson, Bella McLaughlin, Ari Nelson and Kaylee taylor won the 1,600 team race in 4:14.55.
Arlington athletes, meanwhile, won five NCC events. Corrine May (1,600 and 3,200 runs) and Hayley Arp (shot put and discus) won two apiece.
Arp, notably, led a top-five completely comprised of Washington County athletes in the discus. Her best effort covered 125-7, while Isabel Wray of FCHS was second with a 119-7 and the Eagles' Britt Nielsen was third with a 112-foot, 6-inch effort. The Pioneers' Emily Warfield was fourth and Lilly Lang of AHS was fifth, too.
The Eagles' Kolby Tighe led coach Kyle Buckingham's boys team with a 3,200-meter run win as well. He stopped the clock in 9:59.64.
Arlington next hosts its home meet 2 p.m. Thursday with Fort Calhoun in attendance.
Pioneers' Unified lineup wins events
Fort Calhoun's Unified track and field athletes won five conference events Saturday, too.
Anna Taylor, Will Turley, Gavin Welchert and Will Maxon were first in the 400-meter relay, while Maxon and Welchert also won the boys' long jump and the 100-meter dash, respectively. Taylor and Reilly Rauterkus won the girls' long jump and 100 dash at Conestoga, too.
