Fort Calhoun all-state basketball player Grayson Bouwman celebrated signing with the Morningside Mustangs to play college hoops on Jan. 24.
With his new coaches, head coach Trent Miller and Joel Haveman, in attendance, the 6-foot-1 senior posed for photos with friends and family dressed in Mustangs apparel.
“It's good knowing I've found the right school and I'm going to be happy where I'm going,” Bouwman said.
The Pioneer — who was averaging 21.1 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game as of the signing day — picked the Sioux City, Iowa, school based on its campus and education-first mentality, but also for Miller and Haveman.
“I trust the coaches a lot,” Bouwman said. “The coaches reached out quite a bit and I feel like we made a connection.”
FCHS' all-time leading scorer said he'll shoot 3s in college or focus on defense if that's what Miller and Havemen want. He'll do the “dirty work,” too, and earn his way to a more prominent role on the team, if necessary.
The senior standout credited several others for his basketball success up to this point thus far.
“I'd say my parents are a big one,” Bouwman said. They allowed him opportunities to practice, play and improve.
The all-state athlete also thanked his school, Calhoun coach TJ O'Connor and all of the other coaches he's worked with to get better.
At Morningside, Bouwman said he anticipates studying finance.
“I've been set on that for a little while now,” he said before posing for pictures.
