Keyser leads FCHS boys in defeat

The Fort Calhoun High School girls basketball team dominated the third period Thursday in Valley, earning a 49-31 win at Douglas County West.
The Pioneers, who trailed 21-20 at halftime, outscored the host Falcons 19-0 in the 8 minutes after halftime, taking control of the game. The victory pushed their season record to 4-0 overall.
Maelie Nelson scored four buckets and sank two free throws during the game-changing quarter, while Raeann Massey scored twice inside the 3-point arc and Jovi Grenier hit a long-range shot. Ansley Elofson shot two and made two foul shots to contribute to the 19-0 run, too.
Altogether, Massey led FCHS with 16 points, while Nelson had 10. Grenier and Elofson had seven points apiece.
Ava Grimm, meanwhile, led the 0-2 DC West squad in defeat.
Coach Eric Jones' Fort Calhoun squad next competes 5:45 p.m. today against Yutan in its home opener.

FCHS boys' comeback falls short
The Fort Calhoun boys outscored DC West 28-23 during the second half Thursday, but couldn't cut all the way into their halftime deficit during a 54-46 road loss.
The Pioneers trailed 16-8 after one period and 31-18 after two, dropping to 1-3 overall in defeat.
Dylan Keyser led the FCHS in scoring with 12 points, while Adam Elofson had 11. Eli Tinkham, Travis Skelton and Blake Welchert all scored six points, while Kade Foy finished with five.
The Falcons, meanwhile, had Trey Schieber, who finished with a team-best 15 points. Zane Wohlers (12 points) and Will Bergsten (11) scored in double figures as well as DC West improved to 1-1.
Coach TJ O'Connor's Calhoun squad next plays 7:30 p.m. today at home against Yutan. Junior varsity play begins at 4:30 p.m.
