Family Dollar/Dollar Tree opens

The Family Dollar/Dollar Tree hybrid store opened its doors to residents Thursday.

The store, which is located on the north end of Fort Calhoun, will hold items from both dollar store chains.

Community Coordinator Deb Sutherland said the city plans to hold a ribbon cutting in the near future.

The hybrid store, Sutherland said, is unique and will serve specific, basic needs.

"My understanding when they first approached us is Family Dollar is more of the grocery side, and Dollar Tree is more of the dollar, pinpoint item side, so they kind of combined this for smaller areas to fill the needs of both," she said.

For approximately 15 years, Sutherland said Fort Calhoun residents have not had any type of store to pick up basic needs.

"(The store) fills a need that was shown in our strategic plan," she said. "They have some basic items on the grocery side, plus then the other side. You don't have to run into Blair or Omaha necessarily if you don't have big shopping to do."
