Justin Meyer earned his first victory as the new Arlington High School head baseball coach Thursday at the Washington County Fairgrounds.
The Eagles improved to 1-1 with the 9-2 victory against Tekamah-Herman, but are 3-1 overall after Saturday's dominant showing at an Omaha Roncalli triangular.
Against the Tigers, though, AHS responded to Tekamah's only two runs with six of their own across the bottom half of the third and fourth innings. Still ahead 3-2, Tanner Kyllo scored the Eagles' fourth run on a double steal.
Freshman Jack Morgan pushed the home ballclub's lead to 6-2 next, plating Jackson Stosich and Liam Shearer with a double down the right field line.
After three Tiger outs during the top of the fourth frame, Coach Meyer's squad added three more of its own during the bottom half. Senior Tim Halley scored the first, stealing home plate with a head first slide after a leadoff triple.
The Eagles' Luke Sharp notched an RBI double next before he scored his team's ninth run on a passed ball. Altogether, he went 1-for-4, while Morgan was 1-for-3 with a team best three RBIs. Halley stole three bases, while Stosich and Morgan swiped two apiece.
On the mound, Peyton Marfisi, Kyllo and Sharp combined for seven AHS strikeouts. Marfisi had four, allowing just one hit across 2 1/3 innings.
Eagles rout Mount Michael, Roncalli
AHS also dominated games with Elkhorn Mount Michael and the host Roncalli Crimson Pride on Saturday in Omaha. Coach Meyer's squad battled the elements and outscored the two lineups by a combined score of 31-5.
“Bats and defense were on point in the rain today,” he said.
First, the Eagles bested preseason Class C No. 4 Elkhorn Mount Michael 16-1 in five innings. Wes Monke and Halley had three RBIs apiece, while they and their teammates drew 13 walks and were hit by five Knight pitches.
Stosich earned the AHS pitching win, throwing 4 2/3 innings. Shearer tossed one scoreless frame as well.
Arlington then bested the Pride in its second game of the day, 15-4. While Sharp went 3-for-5 with six RBIs, Halley and Marfisi drew a team-best three walks apiece. The Pride handed out 17 free bases in total with 13 walks and four hit batters.
Conversely, Marfisi and Monke combined for eight strikeouts and just two earned runs allowed on the mound for the victors.
