Arlington High School senior Callee Shearer is still so new to high school wrestling.
Even so, she's earned an opportunity to continue her career into college as she recently signed with the Morningside University women's program.
“As my senior has gone through, I've definitely gained more confidence,” the future Mustang said. “And I really want to keep going because two years is not enough for me.”
The 130-pounder, 15-6 overall, put pen to paper with Morningside coach Jordan Cliff in attendance Jan. 8 at AHS. Shearer's high school coaches — Layne Laaker, Madison Pawoll and Doug Hart — posed for pictures with their wrestler during the get-together as did her family and friends, too.
The soon-to-be Mustang only just started her wrestling journey as a high school junior. She was inspired to give the sport a shot after she first saw it in action.
“I went to the one Arlington wrestling meet a couple of years back when the girls first started and I just loved watching it,” Shearer said. “And then, eventually, I was like, 'Maybe I should try it.'”
Classmate Kelise Krivohlavek helped introduce the sport to her from there. She learned the moves and learned to love it, which all led to Jan. 8.
Shearer said she picked Morningside for its “small-town feel” around campus. Everyone she met from administrators to students was welcoming, too.
“It felt like a place I could go,” said Shearer, who plans to focus academically on pre-dental studies.
On the mat, though, the Eagle is set to join a former Blair Bear on the Mustangs' roster. Josie Biffar is a sophomore at the school.
Before college wrestling, though, Shearer still has matches left to win in high school.
“I definitely want to end with a winning record and feel like I really put myself out there on the mat and did everything I could,” the senior said of her goals for the rest of the 2024-2025 season. “And it would be really nice to make it to state.”
