The Blair High School volleyball team won its first set Thursday in Aurora, but couldn’t close out the Huskies during Class B-2 District Tournament play.
Aurora (21-11 overall) won 3-1 (26-28, 25-21, 25-18, 25-20) and will now play at top-seeded Elkhorn North during the district finals on Saturday.
Blair, meanwhile, closes its season 21-14 overall. The 21 wins are the most BHS has earned in one fall since it won 25 in 1995. This season was the Bears second consecutively to end with a winning record, which hadn’t happened since 1998-1999.
Coach Jess Lansman’s team won the first set after senior Emma Ammon broke a 26-26 tie with her fifth kill of the set, according to the KRGY FM radio broadcast. Brooke Roewert made the next swing, notching an ace serve for set point.
After that, though, the Huskies led throughout the second and came from behind to win the third set.
Blair led the fourth set early, too, but had to rally late to pull close and give itself a chance to reach a fifth. Madeline Chikos (kill), Evie Bruck (ace serve) and Andi Hume (block) scored three straight points to pull the Bears within 22-19, but the home team won the match from there.
Seniors Emma Ammon, Ally Sullivan, Morgan Dondelinger, Sophia Kegler, Kenzie Policky and Andi Hume suited up in BHS colors for the last time during the postseason matchup.
