Washington County athletes of all ages competed for Cornhusker State Games medals throughout July and succeeded.
The Games officially began July 15 and concluded Sunday. Some events, including swimming events in Fremont, were completed before the opening ceremonies in Lincoln.
More than 70 sites hosted sports competition. Results are according to results linked to the Cornhusker State Games website.
Aquatics
Mike Huggenberger of Fort Calhoun claimed first in the men's age 70-74 open water swimming mile, while Blair High School students Jane Busboom and Ryleigh Schroeter dominated their State Games swimming events.
Busboom was first in the 50-meter freestyle race in Fremont on July 8, while also taking second in the age 13-14 200 backstroke and freestyle. She joined Schroeter and two more teammates in the first-place, age 15-18 400-meter medley relay, too.
Individually, Schroeter was first in the age 15-18 50 freestyle, and second in the 100- and 200-meter freestyle races.
Allisen Larsen of Arlington earned a medal, too. Her mixed 11-12 year-old 200 freestyle relay team was third.
Archery
Three archers from Blair's Orion Archery Club claimed first-place finishes. Susan Bensen competed in the Women's Traditional Division and earned gold in the Indoor 450.
Chauncey Wilkins, meanwhile, was first in the Men's Traditional Outdoor 750 and the 3-D shoots. He was second in the Indoor 450, too.
Bill Gottberg claimed three first-place golds, too. He did so in the Barebow Division's Indoor 450, the Outdoor 750 and the 3-D competition.
Myron Calrson of Blair also claimed a third-place medal in the 3-D shoot in Lincoln.
Cycling
Nicholas Muller of Blair earned a bronze medal cycling in State Games competition. He was third on the 100-kilometer route of the Gravel Grinder, participating in the Men's Open category.
Golf
Young Blair golfer Brock Deutschman earned third in stroke play during the Youth State Championship. He was presented in medal in the age 9-10 grouping.
Martial arts
Kennard martial artists Amanda Hager and Garrett Hager earned top-three medals in taekwondo at the State Games. Amanda was second in the adult intermediate and advanced category of forms, while Garrett was third in age 13-14 black belt sparring.
Pickleball
Laurel Derry earned two pickleball gold medals in Cornhusker play, while John Derry earned one bronze. Laurel was one-half of the first-place women's doubles team as well as the mixed senior doubles duo.
John, meanwhile, was third with his playing partner in mixed senior doubles.
Running
Arlington High School athlete Kolby Tighe ran the Cornhusker State Games 5-kilometer race on Saturday and finished third. The 15-year-old clocked in at 18 minutes, 46 seconds in Lincoln.
