On Monday, organizers in Fort Calhoun submitted a petition to the city clerk, saying they had more than enough signatures to trigger a special election on the topic of the Omaha Police Department wanting to lease space in Fort Calhoun for an outdoor gun range.
Fort Calhoun City Clerk Alicia Koziol said she would submit the petition to the Washington County Election Commissioner's office for signature verification.
The petition drive needs 153 signatures, or 20% of the 761 eligible voters in Fort Calhoun, to trigger a special election. Organizers said they began canvassing on Friday and finished on Sunday afternoon after receiving 241 signatures.
Organizers also have submitted paperwork with the election commissioner to begin a recall effort of Fort Calhoun Mayor Mitch Robinson over his alleged support of the plan.
Subscribers may go to enterprisepub.com or Friday’s Washington County Enterprise for the latest on both petitions.
