Blair sophomore soccer player Victor Hernandez was ready with a list of things the Bears did well Saturday during a 6-0 home win against Omaha Westview.
“We really just connected really well. We switched the ball really well,” he said after swallowing a bite of celebratory cookie. “We just got into open spaces. We were communicating.”
Altogether, the BHS midfielder was pleased with his squad's performance, which improved its season record to 3-3 overall.
“It was just all there today for us,” Hernandez said.
Sophomore captain Eli Belsky added, “I think we did amazing first and last half.”
Coach Curt Scott's Bears scored three goals apiece during the first and last 40 minutes of the nonconference match. Senior Sakuto Yamada scored first during the seventh minute before Hernandez added Blair's second goal against the Wolverines (0-6 overall) in the 11th. The sophomore then added his second goal of the match with just 2:26 left before the break.
Yamada later added his second goal during the second half between scores by both Alex Just and Tommy Scott. Luke Donner, meanwhile, earned the clean sheet at goalkeeper.
The six-goal win at Krantz Field was the Bears' first victory since March 18. It lost matches to The Platte, Hastings and Elkhorn North in-between victories.
“I think it's good coming back from those three losses,” Belsky noted. “We played confident, and we're getting back to how we play the game.”
BHS' most recent defeat came March 25 at Elkhorn North. It lost by five goals in the cold, but used the next four days off to put in a better showing against Westview.
“We recovered,” Hernandez said. “We trained hard — just focused on winning our next game.”
The end result was a positive step forward, Belsky added.
“We played really well,” he said.
The Bears next play 4:30 p.m. today at Omaha North. They then play 7 p.m. Thursday at Ralston.
