Blair High School senior Bode Soukup wants to test himself and grow at the quarterback position.
On Dec. 20, he signed up to do just that. The Bear made his walk-on commitment to the Nebraska Cornhuskers official.
“I just wanted to get into the best opportunity that I possibly could, and get the best coaching that I could to get better,” Soukup said. “In today's age, you never know what could happen down the road. You see stories about walk-ons all the time doing good things at the college level and even at the NFL level. You just never know.”
At BHS, the son of coach Bryan Soukup started for three seasons. Bode set school records in career passing yards and touchdowns, closing out his senior season with 1,660 and 20, respectively. He completed 64 percent of his passes during the 6-5 2023 campaign, going 158-for-248 through the air with two rushing touchdowns, too.
At Nebraska, though, the Lincoln Journal Star all-stater will compete in quarterback drills alongside newly-signed five-star recruit Dylan Raiola, Bellevue West's Daniel Kaelin and the rest of the Huskers' signal-callers.
“It's going to be some pretty tough competition, which, obviously, gets you better,” Soukup said. “That's what I'm looking forward to, mostly.”
The Blair standout, who's ran track in the past and plans to compete in golf during the spring, noted how thankful he is to Nebraska's staff for inviting him to camps and continuing to show interest through his recruiting process.
“Every day I just look back and reflect, and am thankful for where I'm at and what I've been given,” Soukup said. “I know the road ahead is even tougher, but that's what I'm looking forward to.”
The QB reports to Lincoln not long after graduation, May 30. He thinks time will fly as that date approaches.
Soukup is undecided about what he'll study at Nebraska, but he's looking into sports science or possibly business with a focus on real estate studies.
