Blair NHS puts on annual Macho Man tourney

Volleyball event raises money for food pantry

The Frat Boys beat their teachers and coaches in the Macho Man Volleyball Tournament finale Tuesday at Blair High School.
The team of senior boys dressed in collard shirts and mostly-khaki shorts swept through their matches as BHS' National Honor Society (NHS) students raised money for the Washington County Food Pantry. Students collected donations at the door as parents and interested parties entered the atrium.
“It's really cool that we can organize something that goes to something bigger than ourselves,” said senior Taylor Mostek, an NHS member. “It's a fun thing the whole community can be involved in.”
Fellow varsity volleyball player Nicki Wendt and she did not have particularly high expectations when it came to play during the tournament, though they were supportive of their team of senior boys — the Scrubs, who were dressed in health care worker's attire.
“I feel like somebody's going to trip and fall,” Mostek said.
“Rolled ankles,” Wendt added. “There's a possibility for rolled ankles.”
The latter NHS member predicted many on-the-floor infractions, too.
“Definitely some foot faults, but we're going to work through it and it's going to be good,” she said.
Altogether, though, both Wendt and Mostek said they felt the event came together well. They noted how they've been making announcements and asking for donations in the lead-up.
Importantly, too, “We've been getting in the gym as much as possible to practice,” Wendt said.
While it didn't work out for the Scrubs, it did for the Frat Boys. They made it through the ranks, played the teachers and coaches in the finale, and won in the end.
