Down 5-4 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Blair High School baseball team got it together Monday evening.
Coach John Roan's Bears (5-14 overall) strung at-bats together at Vets Field and scored five runs against Lincoln Standing Bear, producing a 9-5 victory — their second win in eight games. BHS' run total was its best since a 11-1win on April 9 and second-best of the season.
Freshman Brevin Leggott plated Cam Wilkins and Carter Saylor for the home team's first runs of the decisive sixth frame. Hudson Hamm pushed across the next by sacrifice before Nathan Murray supplied the Bears' lone extra-base hit of the game. His double scored two runs, Blair's eighth and ninth.
Altogether, Murray went a team-best 3-for-4 against Standing Bear. Leggott was 2-4, too, while Smutny — the catcher — went 2-for-3 with his own RBI. Saylor plated a run during the game, too.
Jakob Gaskill, meanwhile, earned the BHS pitching win. He threw 1 2/3 innings, striking out two Grizzlies. Starter Lucas Matejka struck out three batters, too, before Brock Hamm relieved him and struck out one.
Gretna earns 5-inning win
On Tuesday, though, BHS lost a five-inning game at Gretna, 10-0.
The Dragons (7-9) scored four runs each of the first two innings and two in the third to put the Bears away. Coach Roan's squad outhit their host, 6-5, but picked up their 14th loss of the spring campaign.
Leggott was 2-for-3 for the Bears, while Hudson Hamm, Matejka, Saylor and Thomas Chikos notched a hit apiece.
Pitcher Hans Sorensen suffered the Blair loss. He is 2-2 overall, though, with a 3.82 ERA.
