The Blair High School tennis team lost a close match to Elkhorn on Tuesday at Stemmermann Park, 3-2.
The Bears led 2-1 after its varsity doubles matches, but went 0-2 in singles play. Ally Sullivan and Abby Leggott secured the No. 1 doubles win for coach David Christensen's team, topping the Antlers' Emmy McElhose and Angela Zhang 8-3.
In No. 3 doubles play, BHS' Andi Hume and Kenzie Policky won, too. They topped Elisabeth Hudson and Josey Bryson in a competitive match, 8-6.
The Bears' No. 3 duo revealed the keys to their victory after the match.
“We just had to focus on not making mistakes,” Hume said.
Policky explained how.
“I think it's important when we play to keep good court awareness and place the ball where we know they aren't going to reach it,” she said.
The pairing started the season as first-year junior varsity players, but have held a varsity spot since moving up in mid-April.
“I think we just work really well together because we don't get mad at each other,” Hume said.
The bonds were built off of the court where they are good friends, too.
“So, I feel like we just have a chemistry,” Policky said. “We know when something is wrong, and we know to make sure that we say that it's our fault, so they don't thing it's their's.”
In addition to the scored matches, Blair and Elkhorn played another doubles match and six more on the singles side. The Bears won just one of those contests with senior Jo Inget claiming an 8-4 singles victory.
BHS plays its next varsity dual May 8 at Omaha Skutt before the Eastern Midlands Conference Tournament on May 12.
