The Blair girls soccer team lost five-straight matches leading into the Class B Subdistrict 3 Tournament opener at Krantz Field.
It just didn't look like it Saturday against Omaha Concordia.
The Bears (7-7 overall) fell behind the Mustangs 1-0 during the fifth minute, but scored the next six goals for a lopsided, 6-1 victory — their first since April 11.
“This game definitely helped us,” junior Allison Hernandez said.
BHS' second win of season against Concordia (9-8) restored some confidence and pushed coach Brandon Palmer's team into the semifinals against top-seeded Omaha Duchesne (12-3). An update concerning that Monday afternoon match can be found online at enterprisepub.com/sports.
Against the Mustangs, however, Hernandez evened the score during the 17th minute. Goalkeeper Emma Barnes stopped a shot on goal and a penalty kick by the Bears' Sami Murray, but she was unable to come up with Hernandez's shot on a 1-on-1 opportunity created by a pass from her sister, Valeria.
Allison Hernandez then gave BHS a lead for good with her second goal before Sally Kies tallied the next four. The junior defender played forward Saturday, capitalizing on the opportunity.
“Just switching it up a bit,” Kies said, explaining the move. “Getting some excitement up front, and giving the girls some energy pushing up the field.”
The Bear's first goal came during the 27th minute when cut back with the ball at her feet and shot around a Concordia defender. She used the same move to score her second just after halftime, too.
After the match, though, Kies was unable to describe the maneuver.
“Just cutting back, I guess,” the junior said, laughing.
“She just had really good composure,” Hernandez offered with a smile.
Kaitlyn Johnson earned the win in goal for the Bears, who've earned four shutouts and three one-goal games defensively this season.
