BHS boys force OT, win 61-55

Sorensen steal leads to last-second bucket

A late, fourth-quarter steal and score allowed the Blair boys basketball team to pick up a 61-55 overtime win Thursday at Plattsmouth.
Trailing 49-47 after a pair of missed free throws with 7.6 seconds left in regulation, the Bears' Cooper Sorensen stole a Blue Devils inbound and tossed the ball into the lane to Kalan Steinbeck, who finished the play inside with the game-tying bucket.
Plattsmouth's clock operator, however, failed to start it until well after the score, causing a lengthy delay as the referees sorted out the situation. When play finally resumed, the Devils missed what would have been a game-winning half-court shot.
Instead, both the Bears and the home squad went into overtime play. There, coach Chris Whitwer's team produced its fourth win of the season. Brevin Leggott and Bo Meier each knocked down 3-point shots during the extra session, while Andrew Smutny and Steinbeck made shots from inside the arc.
Altogether, Meier finished with 18 BHS points, while Steinbeck had 16 and Leggott scored 13. Smutny added 11 and Hayden Daggett scored three points.
In defeat, Traveson Skalberg led Plattsmouth with 18 points. Rylee Johnson added 12, too.
The Bears (4-5 overall) next play 7:15 p.m. today. They host an Eastern Midlands Conference foe, Gretna.
