Facing just its second Class B opponent of the spring, the Class A Omaha Westview Wolverines earned their first win of the season Saturday afternoon.
The Blair boys soccer team was the unfortunate opposition. It dropped to 3-4 overall with the 3-1 road loss.
The Bears next play today against Omaha North, another Class A foe. The home match starts at 7:30 p.m.
Against Westview, BHS took a 1-0 lead when Tannon Bellamy connected with junior Victor Hernandez for a goal. The Wolverines tied it up during the first half, though, and eventually took the lead with two goals down the stretch during the second.
The home squad improved to 1-6 with the win.
Bears top Standing Bear
Coming off of a pair of losses to Hastings and Elkhorn North, Blair knocked off Lincoln Standing Bear on Thursday night, 2-0.
“Tonight was really important,” Hernandez said. “I mean, every game is important. We should always be going into a game wanting to win, but we came out with the 2-0, which is what we wanted.”
The Bears would have preferred to score more goals at Krantz Field against the 0-5 Grizzlies, but they were still somewhat satisfied securing their third victory of the season, especially after two shortcomings.
“A win is a win, but we didn't play our best,” sophomore Lane Christensen said.
BHS went into halftime ahead 1-0 even after an early red card and the multiple yellows that followed. Hernandez scored the goal, producing it after having to sit out the Bears' most recent match due to injury.
“That's what anyone would want,” he said. “Coming back out there strong. Coming back out there with a goal.”
The junior credited his teammates for helping him along as did Christensen, who scored the Bears' second-half goal. After the ball found its way to him, he finished the play.
“I just dribbled in, and I just saw the shot and I took it,” the sophomore said.
The two-goal advantage was plenty for Blair against Standing Bear. Sophomore Luke Donner spent the majority of the game in goal, but split time with senior Gabe Flynn for the clean sheet shutout.
