Bench, Schwarte lead FCHS XC at Ashland

Pioneeers finish 3rd in team standings

The Fort Calhoun cross-country team earned two third-place team finishes Monday during the Ashland-Greenwood Invitational.
Bria Bench led the Pioneer girls with a fourth-place performance, while Johnathon Schwarte took the same spot in the boys' race. Coach Kyle McMahon's lead runners completed the 5-kilometer course in 21:36.05 and 19:09.68, respectively.
Dala Drowne added a sixth-place girls finish for FCHS, clocking in at 22:30.77, while Kaitlyn Thalman was 14th and Xinzhi Huang was 20th. Harley Schwarte was 23rd.
Lawson Tjardes finished his 5K in 11th for the Pioneer boys, securing a 19:32.24 time. Gage Nixon was 16th and Clay Bohenkamp was 17th.
Luke Gustafson, meanwhile, earned 20th and Michael Maxon was 24th.
In Ashland's junior varsity boys race, Calhoun's Xander Slatten was second followed by Harrison Geiger in third, Eddie Lathrop in fourth and Jay Stoa III in fifth. Junior high Pioneers Will Dennis and Maelie Nelson won their races earlier in the day, too.
FCHS was scheduled to host its home meet Thursday at Fort Atkinson. Results will be published in Tuesday's Washington County Pilot-Tribune.
