The Blair Volunteer Fire Department (BVFD) will have a new fire chief to start 2021.

Dave Aten was elected chief Thursday by members of the department. Aten replaces Joe Leonard, who was elected first assistant chief.

“It is an honor, but it's also a big responsibility,” Aten said. “I appreciate their trust in letting me do the job.”

Aten has been a member of BVFD for nearly 25 years. He previously has served as chief in 2007-2008 and 2011-2012.

BVFD's new slate of fire ground officers include: Kent Nicholson, second assistant chief; Randy Backman, Assistant Chief of EMS; fire captains Luke Jones, Jake Dunn and Joe Maguire; EMS captains John McIntosh and Clint Clausen.

Fire ground officers serve a two-year term.

The new administrative officers, who serve one-year terms, include: Mike Buttery, president; Ernie Brenneis, vice president; Brenda Jenny, secretary; Jim Pounds, treasurer; and Howard McManigal, sergeant at arms.

The Blair City Council will need to approve the new officers at its first meeting in January.
