Eagles top Ralston, Pioneers on the mat

Out of Arlington, Fort Calhoun and Ralston, the Eagles proved themselves to have the best girls dual wrestling lineup Thursday during the Pioneers' triangular.
Coach Layne Laaker's Eagles beat the Rams first, 48-36, before knocking off the home team 48-27 to finish two-for-two.
“I think all of our girls went out hard and they really went out and competed,” AHS' Dianna Flores said. She specifically noted how the Eagles kept their composure going against Ralston.
“We were a little bit nervous coming in because, last year, they had a great team,” Flores explained. “But I think we came out and we didn't lower our level because we were scared. We just came out and competed.”
Callee Shearer, Kelise Krivohlavek, Jaydin Allen and she all earned pins against the Rams. Allen's took just 38 seconds at 140 pounds, while Shearer's came at the end of a 40-second bout at 130.
Flores' match, meanwhile, came with a few twist and turns before she won in 2:45. Her opponent, the Rams' Dezeray Baker, was able to put the Eagle in danger a few times.
“Coach Laaker, he's been pushing a lot of moving on bottom and moving on your feet,” Flores said, explaining how she was able to prolong her match and win it. “I feel like that's one thing he's helped me grow with.”
In addition to the Eagles' pins, Ella Chamberlain, Evie Bottger, Addyson Beam and Sofie Lewis were all credited with six team points apiece by forfeit against the Rams.
In the Fort Calhoun matchup, though, Arlington won three of the six contested bouts by pin. Rylie Kyllo, Krivohlavek and Lewis earned them fast, too, with Kyllo's taking just 20 seconds. Krivohlavek added a 35-second pin and Lewis' came at the 44-second mark, too.
Flores said she was impressed by multiple teammates Thursday night, but named two seniors in particular after the girls' triangular wrapped up.
“I feel like Callee has grown a lot,” the 170-pounder wrestler said. “Same with Kelise. She's one of my inspirations that I look up to on the team.”
The Eagles were scheduled to compete again Saturday in North Bend, but the tournament was called off due to icy road conditions. They next wrestle 6:15 p.m. today at Elkhorn.
