Arlington catcher Braden Monke successfully tagged out Platte Valley Patriots twice on plays at the plate Tuesday before they finally made it home safe during the seventh and eighth innings.
As a result, the Class B No. 7 Patriots won 5-4 in extra innings Tuesday at the Washington County Fairgrounds.
“Platte Valley, they were just aggressive the whole game,” Eagles coach Tyler Stender said. “They were going to take every extra base they could.”
In the seventh frame, the Patriots took home base on a bunt after the Arlington throw to the plate was off target. The score tied the game at 4-all and eventually sent it to an extra, eighth inning.
During it, Platte Valley again beat an Eagle throw to Monke at the plate. With one base runner on and two outs, the Patriots took the lead — 5-4.
Class C No. 9 Arlington responded by loading the bases with Tim Halley, Darren Olson and Grange Suhr, but the third out came before the game-tying fifth run.
“(Platte Valley) just executed the little things a little bit better than us,” Stender said. “Just a little bit better.”
The coach noted clutch hits and key bunts.
“They're a good ballclub,” he said. “That's what good ballclubs do.”
The Eagles, however, led the Patriots 4-3 after a fourth-run fourth frame. Halley, Olson and Monke knocked in runs, but it, ultimately, wasn't enough.
Eagles fall at Platteview
AHS played five innings Monday, dropping a 12-2 run-rule game at No. 4 Platteview.
The Eagles managed nine hits, but couldn't overcome the Trojans' 13. The home team scored six runs during the second inning, three in the third and three during the game-ending fifth frame.
Killian McIntosh went 3-for-3 for Arlington in defeat, while both Trevor Denker and Blaine Vogt logged two hits apiece. Monke and Olson notched one each as well.
