It was homecoming time this past week for both Blair and Fort Calhoun High School.
The Arlington Eagles will celebrate their's this week, too.
Right now, though, the question is simple. Who took home Nannen Physical Therapy Athlete of the Week honors?
Here’s who — Chase Bierman, Declan McCabe and Neva Bauer.
Chase Bierman, Fort Calhoun football: This Pioneer and Logan Brewer have had a knack for making winning plays this season. That was especially so for Bierman on Friday when No. 9 FCHS beat No. 6 Pierce, 28-21, and I’m not just talking about his four extra-point kicks. The senior notched a massive sack, setting up the Pioneers’ game-tying touchdown just before halftime. He then recovered a fumble when the Bluejays threatened tying the game at the end of the third quarter. We shouldn’t forget that Ray Caruso and he combined for the game-sealing tackle, too, forcing the clock to run out late. Those things add up in big games. Special mention, however, goes to the entire football team for holding up against a much larger Pierce squad. It also goes to Chris Post-Whiteowl, who led a dominant FCHS showing at the Arlington cross-country meet on Thursday.
Declan McCabe, Blair cross-country: The Bears’ race in Bennington was nearly thwarted by the weather, but, when it happened, this senior was coach Carson Norine’s top finisher. McCabe finished the Badgers’ 5-kilometer course in 17:44.59, securing ninth overall. Special mention goes to the Blair softball seniors, who didn’t have the best luck this week. Their Senior Night game was suspended due to weather. It also goes to outfielder London Larsen, who hit a grand slam Thursday against Waverly.
Neva Bauer, Arlington cross-country: This freshman runner is off to a heck of start for coach Michaela Curran’s team. She finished the home meet second overall, clocking in at 21:20.22 across 5 kilometers in the mud. Special mention goes to her fourth-place teammate, Corinne May, as well as Lilly Lang and Adrianna Mincer of the AHS softball team. Lang notched the game-winning RBI against Highway 91 on Saturday, while Mincer had a two-home run week.
As always, I appreciate you reading. Have a good week.
