It’s a new week.
And there’s three new Nannen Physical Therapy Athletes of the Week. They are wrestlers Alex Schuler, Carson Faue and Ben Flesner, who just competed at district wrestling and earned their state spots.
Alex Schuler, Fort Calhoun wrestling: The 190-pounder secured a district title Saturday in Crete, going 3-0 with a 7-4 decision win during the finals. He is 29-17 this season. Special mention goes to second-place district wrestler Merritt Olberding as well as basketball player Adam Elofson, who scored 20 points against Raymond Central.
Carson Faue, Blair wrestling: The 150-pounder finished third during the district tournament, going 3-1. He is just 21-23 this season, but pinned a 30-14 Elkhorn North wrestler to claim a bronze medal. Special mention goes to district champions Hudson Loges and Blaise Baughman as well as basketball standout Kate Wulf, who scored 33 points across two BHS wins against Omaha Concordia and Omaha Roncalli. Swimmer Jane Busboom deserves some credit, too, for breaking her own 100-yard backstroke FHS record.
Ben Flesner, Arlington wrestling: The 20-21 Eagles 165-pounder knocked off a 39-11 Battle Creek wrestler to advance onto the state tournament through the heartbreak round. He was 4-2 overall during districts in Malcolm. Supreme special mention goes to basketball players Trent Koger, Britt Nielsen and Emme Timm. If it weren’t districts week for wrestling, they’d all have undisputible cases for their schools’ honor today. Koger and Nielsen both surpassed 1,000 career points Friday, while Timm continues to rewrite AHS’ assist records.
Thanks for reading. Please have me in mind as I try to survive five days at state wrestling this week. Hopefully I don't spend my whole paycheck on soft pretzels.
