It can turn into an unenviable job narrowing down a week’s worth of success for the Nannen & Harte Physical Therapy Athletes of the Week feature.

The kids did too good this week.

Three of the very best of the last seven days, however, were Mollie Dierks, Nolan May and Taylor Mostek. They all produced results and absolutely delivered as you’ll find out below.

I do have to mention two more athletes from Blair High School, though. Kalli Ulven and Brock Templar were on fire this week.

Ulven, who I also recognized in Part 1 of this school year’s Athletes of the Week feature, hit two homers and pitched a shutout during the Bears’ Eastern Midlands Conference Softball Tournament title run. Her stat line through 20 games this fall — .667 batting average, 41 RBIs and six homers — is insane and I expect she’ll contend for many more weekly honors to come.

Templar, meanwhile, scored three touchdowns — two on the ground and one more on a passing play — as Blair earned its first football win of the fall.

As I said, it was a tough week to be the Washington County sports writer. Congratulations to everyone mentioned here, including the chosen three.

Mollie Dierks, Fort Calhoun volleyball: The senior is a record-setter. After 20 digs against Omaha Brownell-Talbot on Tuesday and 10 more Thursday night, Dierks stood alone as the Pioneers’ career leader in the statistic. She had 560 digs as of the Centennial match.

Nolan May, Arlington cross-country: I gave the Eagle’s teammate the honor last week, but May gave me no other choice to select him for this edition. He earned his second 5-kilometer victory of the season Thursday, finishing his home course at the Washington County Fairgrounds in 17:08.3. It led his AHS squad to the team title.

Taylor Mostek, Blair volleyball: The junior put together an all-around five-set match against Elkhorn on Thursday. She had 14 kills, eight service aces, a block, 20 digs and received 32 serves from the Antlers. Mostek’s teammate, Nicki Wendt, deserves special mention, too, for notching a team-best 18 kills against Elkhorn.

Thanks for reading. And, remember, the sports editor job is more difficult than it looks, particularly when you’ve got to make decisions like these!

Please don't tell my farming father I said that.
