No. 6 Elkhorn North boys topple Blair soccer

Posted

The wind whipped through Elkhorn North on Monday as the Class B No. 6 Wolves hosted the Blair boys soccer team.
The home team beat the Bears, too, 5-0. It led 3-0 at halftime and improved to 4-0 in victory as the wind chill hit as low as 27 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
Coach Curt Scott's team, meanwhile, dropped to 2-3 with its third-straight loss. The combined win-loss record of the teams the Bears have faced during the skid is 11-2.
On Monday, North booted the ball off of the crossbar during the fourth minute and scored its first goal in the 10th when junior Jackson Crom found the back of the net.
BHS goalkeeper Luke Donner made a save less than 60 seconds later to keep his team within a score of the Wolves before Victor Hernandez nearly evened the tally with a top-shelf shot on goal in the 18th. The opposing goalkeeper was just able to punch it away.
During the 30th minute, though, Elkhorn North went ahead 2-0 when Ben Sullivan scored. Three minutes later the lead jumped to 3-0 with Crom's second.
After an intermission, Hernandez managed another Blair shot on goal just 8 minutes into the second half, but it was saved the Wolves' keeper again. Gavin Dickerson and Zac Keenan, however, got their shots — one in play and another on a penalty kick — past the Bears' goalie, pushing the home squad's advantage to five with just 22 minutes left.
BHS senior Riley Wolff nearly kept the Bears from going without a goal in the 72nd, sending a shot toward the North Keeper, who was only able to stop it with his legs.
The loss was Blair's first by clean sheet this spring. The Bears' Tuesday evening game against Columbus Scotus was postponed by weather to Thursday, but its season continues at home 2 p.m. Saturday against Omaha Westview. The Class A Wolverines were 0-3 as of Tuesday.
