Fun in the sun

FCHS hosts meet as a Pioneer breaks a record

Wind was present, but so, too, was the sun for Tuesday's 21st annual Pioneer Invite.
The Fort Calhoun track and field team claimed second in the boys' team standings at its home meet, while the girls took third. The Douglas County West boys and Yutan girls, meanwhile, earned first, respectively.
Andrew Namuth, however, did not win an event. The FCHS junior did break a 28-year-old school record, though.
Namuth cleared 154 feet, 10 inches with his best attempt in the discus, topping the 1996 mark of Greg Eveland by 2 feet.
“He's been working hard on making adjustments to his technique,” throws coach Ginger Dorau said of Namuth. “He continues to improve each day, and is going into the last part of the season strong.”
The Pioneer finished third with his record-breaking discus attempt, but also earned a second-place result in the shot put with an effort covering 48-9.
“He's close to getting that record, too,” Dorau said.
In addition to Namuth's accomplishments, coach Mandy Taylor's Calhoun lineup won four scored events at its home track meet. TJ DeMilt earned gold in the pole vault, clearing a bar set at 12 feet, 6 inches.
The boys' 400 relay squad finished their race in first, too. Alex Schuler, Clay Bohnenkamp, Michael Maxon and Preston Johnson stopped the clock in 44.3 seconds.
The team of Seth Waters, Christ Post-Whiteowl, Will Dennis and Lawson Tjardes was victorious as well. They finished the 3,200 relay in 8:39.3.
The Fort Calhoun girls' 1,600 relay team — Madi Larrick, Ari Nelson, Bella McLaughlin and Kaylee Taylor — won at FCHS, too. It crossed the finish line in 4:21.
An abundance of Pioneers secured second-place finishes Tuesday as well. Maxon (100 dash), Matthew Kelly (110 and 300 hurdles), Taylor (long jump and triple jump), Bria Bench (high jump) and Afton Byelick (pole vault) all produced runner-up results. Byelick's height — 8-6 — broke her own school record.
Next, the Pioneers compete 10 a.m. Saturday during the Nebraska Capitol Conference meet at Douglas County West High School in Valley.
