Blair girls drop district final to Lexington

The Blair girls soccer team dominated 70 of the 80-minute match Saturday against Lexington in the Class B-8 district final.

But the Bears (10-7) came up short, falling 2-0 and one game shy of the state tournament.

“Lexington worked harder than us at times during the game and in those lazy moments they stole a goal from us,” BHS coach Brandon Palmer said. “Effort level from majority of the team was absent today. We need to figure out what the difference is between being hungry and just showing up.”

The game was scoreless at halftime before sophomore Berniece Garcia scored in the 75th minute. Venus Sachnez scored the Minutemaids (14-4) second goal on a penalty kick with 2:36 remaining to clinch Lexington's first state tournament berth in program history.

Lexington had just two shots on goal, while the Bears had double digits.

“The way this district final was tactically set up was extremely beneficial to us but we could not pull off the win today,” Palmer said.

Palmer said the loss should serve as motivation for the team.

“We end the season on a three-game losing streak, which among other things should motivate this young squad for next season,” he said.
