Less than a week after tying a state record in high jump, Arlington junior Kailynn Gubbels broke a state mark in the 100-meter hurdles Friday while her team won the Arlington Invitational.

Gubbels ran the race in 14.75, eclipsing the previous Class B mark of 14.78 set by Julianna Burr of Holdredge in 2014. Gubbels has run faster, according to her coach, but Friday was the first time the wind was measured.

The Eagles won their home meet with 124 points — 9.5 points ahead of second-place Platteview.

“We had quite a few personal bests from the field events to on the track there,” Arlington coach Steven Gubbels said.

For her part, Kailynn Gubbels won the high jump, the 300-meter hurdles, the 100-meter hurdles and was a member of the first-place 1,600-meter relay, which broke a meet record. Gubbels also broke a meet record in the high jump.

“It has been an incredible season for Kailynn,” Stephen Gubbels said. “As a coach, and certainly, as a dad; I have been so proud of not just her performances, but of all the hard work and dedication she has demonstrated all season long.

“After losing the opportunity to compete last spring, she has really been driven and had set some high goals for herself coming into the season,” he added. “It is hard to put into words, but to see her achieve and build upon those goals as the season has progressed, has been really just amazing.”

Sophomore Keelianne Green also took home gold in four events — the 200-meter dash, triple jump, long jump and as a member of the relay team with Gubbels.

Junior Chase Andersen, also a member of the relay team, won the 400-meter dash and finished second to Green in the 200.

“(Chase) probably had her best all-around meet of her high school career Friday with a personal best in the 400 and very strong performances in the 200 prelims and finals,” Stephen Gubbels said.

The Arlington boys finished fourth behind Wahoo, which won the meet with 113 points, followed by Platteview and DC West.

Senior Jesse Thompson took home two first-place finishes in the shot put and discus with throws of 45-02 and 136-03, respectively.

The Eagles 3,200-meter relay team of Nolan May, Kevin Flesner, Colby Grefe, Sebastyen Taylor earned gold with a time of 8:44.95.

Gubbels said a few of the members of the relay team had been dealing with injuries. This race was the first time they had run together in several weeks.

“They all performed very well and have put themselves in a great spot going into next week's district competition,” he said.

Fort Calhoun's boys team finished sixth behind two first-place finishes from junior Jacob Rupp in the meet's distance races. Rupp earned gold in the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200-meter run with times of 4:42.58 and 9:59.63, respectively.

Sophomore Wyatt Appel placed second in the high jump with a height of 5-11.

The Fort Calhoun girls team finished eighth out of eight teams.
