It was chilly Saturday morning during the start of a Junior Division shoot at the Blair Youth Shooting Sports (BYSS) range.
“It's not very fun,” Devon Lantry said of cold shoots.
“We've been through worse,” Gabe Vaughan noted.
Typically, the Eastern Cornhusker Trapshooting Conference schedule takes Junior marksmen and women to Papillion for weekly competition. Events happened at home Saturday, though, for BHS.
“We practice here, and you're just more used to the place,” Lantry said when asked of the advantages of hosting.
“You're here with all of your friends,” Vaughan said. “You know you're welcomed. Everybody else is welcomed.”
The Fremont Black lineup, meanwhile, welcomed its results at the range just north of Blair. Cade Lynch, Drake Daubert, Ayden Schuller, Hudson Knoell and Connor McWhirter won the team title, taking out 213 clay targets. Trenton Hansen of the Fremont Gold lineup took out 43 of the 50 targets he aimed at, too, while Jack Sorensen hit 41.
Blair's top performing lineup — the Crushers — finished with a 164. Landry Benoit and Jackson Kempcke led the unit, tying BYSS teammate Ryker Villwok for the best showing — 41-for-50.
Noah Marquiss was 38-for-50, too, while Eli Stamm and Levi Acre took out 35 targets apiece.
Greyson Nichols (32 targets) and Brock Warner (30) shot at lest 30, too.
Vaughan, meanwhile, felt confident going into the day with the ECTC shoot taking place at his home range.
“Since I feel like I know how they shoot and throw, I feel like I can shoot better today,” he said.
The young marksman did, setting a new career best — 26 targets.

Seniors compete at Valley range
Both the BYSS and Fremont Senior trap teams competed Saturday at Valley where Blair's Target Terminator lineup took first in the 16-yard and high overall standings. Riley Brodersen, Harry Kies, Tyler Hume, Kalvin Kies and Triston Clausen all contributed to the high finish.
Notably, Kalvin Kies was first individually from 16 yards with a 49-for-50 showing. Tyler Behnk was first from 18-19 yards, too, while Brodersen and Gaige Bolton took second and third from 22-23, respectively.
The Fremont Black lineup — Cole Campbell, Wyatt Widman, Kellen Shelton, John VonBehren and Jared Adams — took second from 16, too. Campbell finished with the third-highest total of the day, 90, while Aiden Menking and Wyatt Widman also earned top-three results from their handicap distances.
