The Blair Youth Softball Association fields sat empty Thursday night.
The Class B No. 6 Blair Bears' second attempt at a home opener was postponed when extreme heat preceded storms rolling in overhead. BHS' first scheduled home game from earlier in the week was postponed due to high temperatures, too.
In David City on Thursday, the Arlington Eagles' game against the Blue River Panthers was called early as lightning and storms rolled in. That was after the game was moved from an evening start up to 3 p.m., too.
AHS coach Janelle Lorsch said it was hot in David City when the Eagles arrived and got windy before the weather turned for the worse.
“We had it all,” she added, noting that the weather was “beautiful before we started, too. Such a Nebraska game.”
Fort Calhoun's matchup with Syracuse went on as planned, but only after the varsity and junior varsity starting times were flipped due to the projected poor weather.
FCHS routs Rockets, 14-4
The Class C No. 9 FCHS Pioneers blasted three homers Thursday, defeating the Syracuse Rockets on the road, 14-4.
Tacey Belina, the winning pitcher, hit two home runs, while freshman Dehlia Hallberg hit the first of her career. Altogether, Belina was 4-for-4 at the plate and Hallberg was 3-for-4.
Calhoun's Kaylee Taylor went 4-for-4, too, with a pair of doubles, while Izzy Nolan added two hits.
The third was the largest offensive inning of the Pioneers' run-rule victory. Coach Mandy Taylor's squad scored seven runs during the frame, pushing its 4-1 lead to 11-1.
Fort Calhoun had the weekend off, but hosts Raymond Central today. The Youth Night varsity game starts at 6:30 p.m.

AHS falls to Blue River
Blue River won the weather-shortened game with the Arlington Eagles on Thursday, 8-1.
The 3-4 home team scored once during the first inning, five times in the third and twice more during the fourth. AHS, meanwhile, scored just once altogether in David City, falling to 3-2 in defeat.
Emme Timm reached base first for the Eagles during third inning. She watched as Blue River picked up the second out of the inning before Kallan Reed stepped into the batter's box and delivered, plating Timm for a 1-1 tie.
The even score didn't last long, though, as both the Panthers and the rain won out during the rest of the night.
Arlington was scheduled to play during a tournament in West Point on Saturday and next competes today at Ashland-Greenwood. Results from both days will appear in this Friday's Washington County Enterprise and Arlington Citizen editions.
Blue River 8, Arlington 1, 5 inn.

2 BHS games postponed
Blair's first postponed game of the week was Aug. 26.
The Bears were supposed to open their home schedule against Omaha Skutt, but were unable to as temperatures hit the mid-90s. Their second try — against Lincoln Standing Bear — was thwarted by more high temperatures and projected stormy weather.
The Skutt game will now be played Sept. 9, while the game with the Grizzlies is set for Sept. 30.
BHS' third attempt at 2024 home games came Saturday when it was to host its home invite. Due to early Labor Day deadlines, coverage will appear in this Friday's Enterprise edition.
