Four Washington County fire departments responded to a large brush fire in Burt County on April 23.

The fire, which broke out near Lyons Saturday afternoon, required the response of the Kennard, Blair, Arlington and Fort Calhoun fire departments, as well as response from Thurston, Colfax, Dodge and Burt county agencies.

According to Lyons Volunteer Fire and Rescue, the fire began in a field off of Highway 77 and quickly spread to the north. The fire destroyed two houses before it was contained.

Residents in Burt and Thurston Counties were evacuated from their homes for a brief period while crews battled the fire, according to the Burt County Sheriff's Office.

While the Washington County crews responded to the fire, firefighters and rigs from the Bennington and Irvington departments traveled up to Blair to serve as standby to respond to any Washington County emergency calls.
