The top-seeded Arlington girls basketball team narrowly avoided a first-round home upset Tuesday during the Nebraska Capitol Conference Tournament.
Coach Tashia Wolf's Eagles (13-3 overall) held off the eighth-seeded Douglas County West Falcons, though, winning 48-45. They next host No. 4 Fort Calhoun today at 6 p.m. The winning team advances onto the 4:30 p.m. Saturday title game at Logan View, while the losing squad will play for third at 1 p.m. in the same gym.
Arlington led the Falcons just 46-45 during the waning moments, needing to inbound the ball multiple times to run out the clock as DC West accrued the necessary team fouls to send the Eagles to the free throw line. Finally, with 12.2 seconds left in the tourney game, AHS' Macy Wolf went to the charity stripe and knocked down two free throws for a three-point advantage on the scoreboard.
The Falcons fired two long shots during the time remaining, but came up empty on both.
Wolf finished the game 4-for-4 from the free-throw line and with nine points total. Senior Britt Nielsen, meanwhile, scored a game-high 22 points with 15 during the second half.
The Eagles' Emme Timm scored 11 points, too, as her team advanced onto the tournament semifinals.
