'Terrific' AHS topples Calhoun

Eagles score season-high 61 in road win

Basketball coaches Luke Brenn and Marty Plum sat on opposite benches Tuesday night at Fort Calhoun High School, but they were in complete agreement after Arlington's 61-46 win.
“Our girls, they played really well,” Brenn said after his Eagles improved to 10-8 this season.
“I want to give Arlington all of the credit in the world, they played terrific tonight, especially on offense,” Plum noted after his Pioneers dropped to 8-11. “Now, we gave them a lot of good looks, but they took advantage of it every single time.”
The winning coach was pleased in nearly all aspects.
“I thought we rebounded fairly well,” Brenn explained. “I thought we executed our offense extremely well in the half-court, and I thought we played really good defense.”
After AHS and Calhoun traded buckets early, freshman Emme Timm hit a 3-pointer to give the road team a 16-13 advantage during the second period. The Eagles built from there, too, securing a 30-21 halftime lead on a Macy Wolf bucket.
The margin between the Washington County schools grew to as many as 18 points during the third period when Arlington's Libby Hegemann made a basket at the buzzer. She scored four points total, while Britt Nielsen notched a game-high 22 despite foul trouble limiting her time on the floor.
Wolf added 18 for the winning team as well, though several Eagles contributed in the end.
“Hailey O'Daniel came in off of the bench. Austyn (Flesner) came in off the bench,” Brenn said. “Valeria (Carvajal). Callee Shearer came out, made that shot off the bat. I'm just proud of all of the girls.”
Though AHS held a firm grip on the game, Fort Calhoun cut its 48-30 disadvantage to just eight at one point during the final quarter.
“Since I've been here, the kids have been really resilient,” Plum said. “If you asked me to sum up in one word who these kids are, it's resilient.”
The Pioneers started the final 8-minute period with seven-straight points scored by Bria Bench — who finished with a team-best 15 — and Izzy Greenough. O'Daniel would cut off the run with an Eagle basket, but Jovi Grenier — who scored 14 FCHS points — completed a three-point play from the foul line to cut her squad's deficit to just 50-40.
Bench would score again to drop Arlington's lead to eight, but it was as close as the Pioneers would get.
“You just can't dig yourself that big of hole,” Plum said. “You've got to get some stops.”
Fort Calhoun didn't and AHS finished with its single-game high in points scored this season.
“It was just a great all-around game,” Brenn said. “And not only the varsity game — our JVs played really well, too. It was good night all-around for us.”
