SUBDISTRICT UPDATE: 1 county team advances with comeback

Posted

All three Washington County boys basketball teams fell behind Tuesday during subdistrict tournament play, but one came all the way back to win.
The Blair Bears won their second game in two days at Bennington High School, advancing to the district final round. They play at Alliance on Saturday with a 1 p.m. Mountain time (2 p.m. Central) tip. Coach Chris Whitwer's team is one win away from the state tourney, however, after wins against Schuyler and the Class B-5 host Badgers.
BHS' Luke Ladwig knocked down a last-second, game-winning free throw Tuesday as the 10-11 Bears beat Bennington, 54-53. They trailed by 13 points going into the final quarter before coming all the way back to win and advance.
Fort Calhoun, meanwhile, cut a 16-point Omaha Concordia lead to two in Arlington before ultimately succumbing to the Class C1 Subdistrict 4 top seed 55-49. Zane Schwarz scored 17 points for the Pioneers, who end their season 8-14 overall.
Douglas County West then built a 23-7 lead against Arlington in C1-4 play before the Eagles (14-9) cut that advantage to 33-24 by halftime. In the end, though, the Falcons moved on with a 67-45 win.
The loss ended the senior season of AHS' Aiden Foreman, who scored 15 points in his final game.
