Blair Bears Ethan Baessler and Nolan Slominski earned records and gold medals Thursday during the second and final day of the NSAA Class B State Track & Field Championships in Omaha.
Their efforts and their teammates helped push coach Bryan Soukup’s BHS boys to a runner-up finish.
The Bears clinched the second-place designation with a second-place finish in the meet’s last event — the 1,600-meter relay. Caleb Funk, Slominski, Ted Lueders and Baessler clocked in at 3:23.67.
Baessler, meanwhile, finished the the 100- and 200-meter dashes in 10.53 and 21.6 seconds for a pair of gold medals. His 100 time is the new state and meet record, while his 200 time broke his own school record.
Slominski, however, won the 800 run in 1:54.85 — another school record.
The Blair girls’ Reese Beemer, meanwhile, earned a pair of medals Thursday. She was sixth in the 100 and seventh in the 200 dash.
Both of BHS’ 400 relay teams medaled, too. The Unified team — Riley Yanak, Cooper Sorensen, Lincoln Kruse and Atticus Dick — was third, while Zac Keeling, Baessler, Colin McCabe and Ben Holcomb were eighth.
Jaden Rogge and Cornez Tucker medaled third in the Unified shot put, too.
On Wednesday, the Bears’ 3,200-meter relay team notched a second-place finish, while Greta Galbraith was third in the pole vault as well.
On Thursday, though, Arlington’s Cadie Robinson and Hailey O’Daniel earned the Eagles’ two 2023 state medals. O’Daniel was fifth in the 1,600-meter run in 5:16.28.
Robinson, meanwhile, was seventh in the shot put with her best attempt traveling 38 feet, 11.25 inches.
Fort Calhoun’s Kaylee Taylor earned her team’s best finish Thursday, taking 12th in the triple jump.
