Tjardes competes at Kentucky National Horse Show
Fort Calhoun High School student Harper Tjardes recently finished fifth out of 21 horse and rider teams at the $20,000 TAKE2 Hunter & Jumper Finals in Lexington, Ky.
The 14-year-old and her horse, King of Hearts, also combined to earn the TAKE2 Junior Rider Award during the equestrian event for retired thoroughbred race horses at the Kentucky National Horse Show.
Tjardes' horse is stabled at Flying Change Farm near Kennard and is trained by Danielle Risler-Urban.
Youth football teams continue play
Blair Youth Football Association Jr. Bears teams continue Metro Youth Football League play into October, while the Arlington Youth Sports (AYS) and Fort Calhoun Youth Sports Organization (FCYSO) teams play Great Plains Youth Football League postseason games this weekend.
The AYS Jr. Midget football team went 0-5 in regular season play. It's closest loss was a 14-6 defeat to the Fremont Jr. Tigers on Aug. 28.
The Eagles now play 4 p.m. Saturday at Waverly High School.
The FCYSO Jr. Midget team, meanwhile, went 1-4 with a 19-13 victory against St. Wenceslaus/St. Stephens on Aug. 21. The Pioneers next compete 2 p.m. Sunday in Valley on the Douglas County West High School field.
Jr. Bears teams are still in the midst of their regular season schedules. Three games will be played Sunday on the former Dana College football field. The eighth-grade squad starts play at noon before a sixth-grade game at 1:30 p.m. and the third-grade outing at 3.
Mentored youth hunt set for October
The Washington County Pheasants Forever chapter is hosting its 18th annual Mentored Youth Pheasant Hunt next month.
The event is Oct. 8 with participants learning hunter safety, the hunting process, how to clean the birds and more. More local Pheasants Forever information can be found online at faceboook.com/washcopf.
