The Fort Calhoun High School dance team recently attended and competed during a Universal Dance Association camp at the Courtyard Omaha-La Vista Convention Center.
Coach Miranda Weingaertner noted her team's successes, which included three spirit sticks, seven red ribbons, nine blue ribbons and a Pioneer dancer's All-American qualification.
The FCHS dance roster is Natalie Reichert, Ellie Collins, Ruby Garmong, Abbey Linemann, Leah Klabunde, Abigail Russell, Madison Buczkowski and Kaitlyn Thalman.
The Pioneers display their skills throughout the school year, including performances during fall football games.
IGHSAU honors Dana College Hall-of-Famer
The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union recently honored Dana College Hall of Famer Joanne (Gochenhour) Bracker with its First Lady Award.
The honor is presented “to a daughter of Iowa” and is the most-prestigious award the IGHSAU bestows on individuals, according to an organization release. Bracker is the 14th recipient.
The 1963 West Harrison High School graduate played six-on-six basketball and played collegiately in Blair at Dana. She graduated with honors and later earned Hall of Fame status.
Bracker went onto coach Midland University hoops for 42 seasons, guiding her teams to 742 wins and eight NAIA National Tournament appearances.
In addition to her Dana College honors, the former Viking was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999.
Theiler claims Academic All-American honor
Doane baseball player Andy Theiler, an Arlington High School graduate, was announced as an NAIA Baseball Academic All-American second-teamer Monday.
He and teammate Talon Little were recognized by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Theiler hit .359 with 14 homers in 49 games last season and will enroll in Doane's Masters program to continue his education and playing career next school year, according to a school release.
Fall turkey permits available soon
Hunters may purchase Nebraska fall turkey permits beginning Aug. 9 at 1 p.m.
The permits are valid statewide and allow the harvest of two turkeys of either sex with a shotgun or archery equipment, according to a Game and Parks Commission release. Each hunter my have up to two permits and there is no minimum age requirement for the Sept. 15 to Jan. 31, 2022, season.
Permits will be available to purchase online at outdoornebraska.org and in person a permitting offices.
