The Fort Calhoun football team made the most of their final home game of 2020.
The Pioneers (2-6 overall) hosted and routed winless Omaha Concordia on Friday night, 48-8.
“Our whole team really gave a great effort on Senior Night,” FCHS coach Adolph Shepardson said. “I am so excited that our seniors got to have such a great experience in their last home game.”
It was juniors Zane Schwarz and Clint Dierks, however, that got the Pioneers off to a fast start. First, Dierk, a back, threw a rare pass, connecting with Schwarz for a 68-yard touchdown just 57 seconds into the contest. Senior Jake Seina added the extra-point kick as Fort Calhoun went ahead 7-0.
Dierks then added a first-quarter, 26-yard scoring run and a 31-yard interception return touchdown on back-to-back drives. Schwarz followed that up, too, hauling in a 27-yard TD pass from quarterback Ty Hallberg with 1:47 still left in the first.
The QB, as it turned out, was just getting started.
Ahead 27-0, Hallberg threw two more touchdown passes during the second quarter. The first went 9 yards to senior Jayden Hunter before the second, again, went to Schwarz from 28 yards out.
“We played our best overall game of the season,” Shepardson said of the Pioneers' effort.
Schwarz notched FCHS' final touchdown, too, scoring on a 9-yard run during the third quarter. Concordia added a late score in the fourth, but fell to 0-8 as Shepardson's squad earned its second win in three weeks' time.
Overall, the Pioneers tore away four, first-half turnovers — three interceptions and one fumble recovery — while their passers were 14-for-14 threw the air.
Next, Calhoun squares off against the district leader in its season finale. Logan View/Scribner-Snyder is 7-1 and will host the Pioneers on Friday, but Shepardson said his team is looking forward to competing with the Raiders.
“We are treating Logan View as our playoff game this year, and we are excited for the opportunity,” he said.
